Petition To Prevent Oil Pipeline Being Built

Assalamualaikum and greetings, all.

Below is the link to a petition, as mentioned in the title, to prevent an oil pipeline being built from Canada, across the whole of America, and down to the Gulf of Mexico.

This pipeline, if successfully built, will cause oil spills all over the US, can poison the drinking water, and will emit a LOT of carbon dioxide.

This petition will be sent to President Obama, and will hopefully move him to reject the proposal to build the pipeline.

20 Volunteers Needed for Brunei-Singapore Green Xchange

The Student Community Outreach Team (SCOT) will be holding an AWARENESS CAMPAIGN for the residence of Kg Bolkiah A and B.

The Green Xchange Project will be officiated on 25th September 2011, so 20 VOLUNTEERS are needed for the aforementioned awareness campaign to inform the residence of Kg Bolkiah A and B about the stated project in advance.

This awareness campaign will be held next week on the 26th, 27th and 28th August. Volunteers will be needed to:

- inform the residence of Kg Bolkiah A and B from door-to-door to collect recyclable materials for the event

- distribute flyers around the area to residents

SCOT will be conducting a training/briefing for the selected volunteers on the 25th of August, 2011 (tentative).

As mentioned before, the socks that we donate would have a heartening effect when receivers get care notes as well.

YOU can make a change with a simple yet meaningful message. We've prepared template messages in Japanese (with the help of one of the Japanese lecturers in UBD) and you are to personalise them.

We will need your brilliance, patience and cooperation to process the socks so they're ready for shipping as soon as possible. Around 800 pairs of socks are waiting for you to be filled with love and care.

Socks for Japan

This is a project started by Jason Kelly, an author residing in Japan, through his blog. Inspired by a news footage where a victim was requesting socks, he started this and many from around the world has responded. And now, it's our turn to take part!

One simple way to help Japan - SOCKS SOCKS SOCKS! Brand new ones of any sizes, preferably thick socks.

Bring those brand new socks that you want to donate to CLT G.6 on Wednesday, 23rd March 2011. We'll be receiving from 2.00 p.m. onwards.

Why socks?

"Several reasons. Many of the victims ended up barefoot after fleeing in a hurry. In the disaster zone, feet get wet and then extra cold at night, especially in currently freezing weather. People often forget about socks in favor of more obvious items like blankets and jackets. Receiving a new, fresh pair of socks provides a moment of comfort. If those socks arrive with a caring note as well, it’s very heartening for victims. If you’ve ever been stuck in a pair of wet, cold socks or no socks at all, perhaps you remember how soothing it felt to pull on a warm, dry pair. Victims have already requested socks on TV news." -Jason Kelly.

Friendly Notices

Just a few friendly reminders about how our club works and what we do, in brief:

(1) Volunteering:

Half of the time, other clubs from UBD AND OUTSIDE of the university requires our assistance, simply because of the nature of our club --> volunteering! For example, at times the UBD Students Council would be in need of our assistance for an event, so we would be responsible for only what we are required to do, e.g. collecting name list, and may NOT be responsible for the whole event.

We are like free labour, volunteering with pleasure :)

(2) Certificates:

Certificates for CLUB ACTIVITIES will be given only to those who are ACTIVE in at least HALF of the club's OWN activities. Please be reminded that some of the volunteering events are NOT held by UVC, and hence are not included under 'club activity' category.

During COLLABORATIONS with other clubs (from and outside UBD), certificates are tentative upon the other club, whether THEY provide them or not.

(3) Club Meetings

We may not hold meetings every week, again, due to the nature of our club --> volunteering. Sometimes, there would be an overlapping of volunteering events required by other clubs, as well as our own, that club meetings OR activities will be done when there are no other events.

Notifications of meetings will be posted on our blog, AND facebook.

(4) Registration Fees

The $4 registration fees will be used for any financial needs FOR THE MEMBERS during any CLUB ACTIVITIES, for members certificates, as well as any other necessary club needs. For example, refreshments and transport will be paid for using the registration money if a Kenali Negara Kitani club activity is held.

I.N.S.P.I.R.E Club UBD in collaboration with Brunei Darussalam AIDS Council will be holding HAPPY this Friday.

HAPPY is one of the main programmes conducted by the Brunei Darussalam AIDS Council in raising awareness among the community regarding HIV and AIDS-related matters. This is going to be the second HAPPY done after the first HAPPY which was organized in March, 2009.

Objectives are;

• To increase HIV awareness among youth
• To help change the wrong perception towards HIV-related matters
• To help the target group to make the right choices
• To help the target group to make rational choices in social issues
• To help spread the message gained by the participants to their friends

There will be lots of SUPER FUN activity to do and lots of interesting information to know...... So, COME AND JOIN AND THE FUN! :D and yes, It is OPEN :D so if anyone wants to come, PLEASE DO! :D

Event: Packaging donated items for victims of South Thailand flood, and tsunami in Merapi & Mentawai, Indonesia.

All donated items, such as canned and dry foods, medicine, books (preferably English, Malay and Jawi), oral rehydration packets, and clothings, will go directly to the victims of Southern Thailand flood, and Merapi & Mentawai tsunami, Indonesia. UBD Sawaddee Humanitarian Donation Drive

From the words of Sawaddee Club:

"Sawaddee club is having a one week donation drive until 18th Nov . We emphasize on books, medicines, dry foods, clothes, blankets and more. Shipment will insyaAllah be done by this month because we want to help right when they are recovering and while floods are receding. This effort is supported by the Thai embassy and insyaAllah, they will help with shipping cost.

UBD sawaddee club community work team had previously volunteered to teach in schools in south Thai for a month last June. It will be shipped to the people we knew in south Thai. So we can assure you, it will reach south thai (especially the schools that we had volunteered in) Shipping cost we cover as much as we could from the funds collected from our bake sale and also if you want to donate for the shipping costs.

Some of the things may be brought to South Thai end of year as about 5 of our team members will be going to Yala and Pattani to visit our foster family and friends. As for the Indonesian victims, PERMAI (persatuan masyarakat indonesia) might manage the donated goods, we're just helping them out too.

As to share the news with you all, we heard the news from foster family and friends in south thai that ada 2 students who was taught last june by sawaddee community work team had passed away during the flooding. it was that serious. Thus we are compelled to make this effort.

So, if there are family and friends who wants to donate, text 7125747 (Atiqah), or drop by UBD during the mentioned time at CLT between 9am to 4pm till next week Thurs. (Please note that we won't be around on Sundays and public holiday (on wed))

On request from UVC members and UBDians, we continued the second round of donation collection and charity sale today, Thursday, 21st October 2010, from morning until afternoon.

Alhamdulillah, today we've managed to raise more than double (almost $300!) of what we've earned yesterday from sales and donations. Well done to those who've donated their stuff, bought anything, and also the committee and UVC members for helping out! May God bless your good deeds, amin :)

We are looking forward to more donations, and due to demands, we will be continuing our charity sale on Saturday, 23rd October 2010, from morning till afternoon at UBD CLT foyer again.

All items are 'Set-Your-Own-Price', whilst keeping charity in mind :)

Money made from sales will go to SMARTER Brunei :)

What you can do:

Give away used-but-good clothes, books, magazines, papers, accessories, shoes, bags, files, etc! We have received a generous number of donations from just a group of UVC members during the first club activity, and are looking forward to more! The donated stuff will be sorted on the day itself.

You can also buy stuff other people have donated! "One's rubbish is another one's treasure" :) All proceeds will go to SMARTER Brunei. So help us out to help them out!

"Beach Bunch together with BARA, CARE & Poni Dive Club will be leading the cleanup on the beach and in the water! Divers and shoreline volunteers needed! Join us and help make a difference.

Six million tonnes of debris enter the world's oceans every year wreaking havoc on underwater creatures and environments every day. For 16 years, Project AWARE Foundation has led underwater and shoreline cleanup efforts in partnership with scub...a divers worldwide and Ocean Conservancy.

During the recent International Cleanup Day, they removed over 222'000 kg/490'000 lbs of debris. Debris that would otherwise continue to poison our waters and be "out of sight and out of mind" for most.

More than 90 countries collected a staggering 140'814 cigarette filters, 78'854 plastic bags and found baby sharks, fairy penguins, moray eels and sea turtles, entangled and killed by the debris. Let's join the global effort and show that Brunei's also a responsible global citizen!

Dear UVC club members, our first activity starts next week! Attendance will be taken (registered members).

Dear UVC members,

The first club activity will be held on Wednesday, the 13th October 2010! We will be making bookmarks out of used easi or bmobile cards, and the theme of the bookmarks will follow UBD's 25th anniversary theme. ((Please bring any used cards!)) These bookmarks will be used and given away to the public during the 25th UBD anniversary event :)

We would also be recycling any old stuff to make something new! Also, please bring any old shirts or pants (washed) which you don't need any more. Remember the scene in the latest Twillight movie where Bella's mum gave her a graduation present of a blanket made up of her old clothes? :) We have that in mind! All the tools will be provided, so bring your creativity and spirit! :)

Members are also encouraged to bring old-but-good plants in pots during the first activity. The pots will be painted, and later on donated for charity :) Nothing brings life to a place than life (in this case, living plants!) itself :)

We will also be starting a collection drive, where old-but-good stuff (ANY stuff!) are donated by the whole of UBD (and outside), and these stuff will be given to various bodies as well :) You'll leave with more than you came in with, heart enlightened and richer in good deeds! :))) You can also contact us through 8613109 or 8721234 if you want to give the stuff to use personally, or e-mail uvcvolunteers@gmail.com, if you want to set up a meeting for the collection. So start rummaging through your old piles now, donate stuff and do charity without doing anything much! :)

In summary, members (and also non-members if interested) need to bring:

-Used easi + bmobile cards + anything possible (to make awesome bookmarks!)
-Old t-shirt or pants (for a stitching project! :))
-Unwanted plants in pots (pots painted to be donated!)
-ANYTHING you want to donate (collection drive starting!)

This is a reminder to all SOBD volunteers regarding your activities.

First is the health screening activity which will take place on Thursday, 30th September 2010 at 8am at Ripas Sports Complex. Training will take place on Wednesday, 29th September 2010 at the same place.

Due to the number of athletes being less than was initially expected, the health screening event will only take place in the morning and so, all volunteers are required to come in the morning. Also, because Thursday is UBD Graduation Day, there will be no classes and therefore you have less of an excuse to not be there :D

In regards to the volunteers for the technical committee, there will be a test on Thursday afternoon at 3.30 at the MPH stadium. It will be a written test based on the game of bocce. This test is neccessary because it qualifies you to be one of the judges for the game, which is the post you are actually volunteering for. For those of you who do not have the rules at hand, you can google them up. Please be at the MPH stadium by 3 pm for the test.

As for the SOBD event itself, the morning shift will be from 8am to 1pm, and the afternoon shift will be from 12pm to 6 pm.

Accommodation Committee - Special Olympics

Hello peeps!

As most of you may know, there is a Special Olympics Brunei Darussalam event this weekend. However, it doesn't just include Bruneian kids. It's a Special Olympics Asia Pacific Brunei Darussalam event and includes kids from other countries as well such as the Philippines and New Zealand!

As such, these kids are staying at the Games Village, Berakas. They need volunteers to help to organize everything during the kids' stay at the Games Village. Here are some of the tasks that volunteers are required to do:

- To label each room according to the list given
- To assist in registering all the delegates starting 28th September (Tuesday) from 3pm (these include completing the accommodation registration form, distribution of room keys and the air conditioner remote control)
- To show delegates to their respective rooms
- To be available at the Games Village at all time according to the shift time table given
- To attend and able to assist to all the needs relating to accommodation
- To liaise at all times with the main accommodation committee – Wati (8659067) and Dk Tini (875 6774)
- Proactively able to help in any matters during their shift period.

We would appreciate it greatly if you guys are willing to volunteer at such short notice.

There will be a briefing tomorrow 28th September 2010, at 1.30-2.30pm; Venue: Games Village.

SOBD Technical Committee: Briefing Updates

Hello all!

1) This is an update for those who couldn't make it on the Friday morning, 24th September, for the Technical Committee briefing at Pusat Bahagia Pulaie. This is basically directly a part of the previous post, just in case the volunteers have not checked their e-mail :)

At the meeting, we were briefed about the history of Special Olympics, why the event was created in the first place, the game held by Brunei called Bocce (something like lawn bowling), and the rules of the bocce game. The rules were emphasized on because we, the volunteers, will be the judges. I will briefly explain what the volunteers from UBD are suppose to do during the event, below.

But first, a brief history! ;) (So you know why this is worth your time :))
The Special Olympic was created for the intellectually disabled to provide them sporting opportunities, as well as to create awareness amongst the general community. This event is not only for them, but for us as well, since we will be learning to 'listen' and 'look' for their wants and needs because they might not be able to voice them out themselves.

There are different types of sporting event available for the intellectually disabled, but we will be focusing on the bocce competition only here in Brunei at the moment. Bocce is something like lawn bowling, where coloured balls will try to be hit as close to the white target ball as possible.

The volunteers have been asked to be the judges. There are 3 different types of judges: Court Referee, Flag Official, and Line Judge. ALL the UBD-ian volunteers will be the Line Judge/linesmen. BASICALLY, the task of a linesman is to measure how close the coloured ball is to the white target ball. Only the measurements of the 3 closest coloured balls will be taken. We should measure from the side of the coloured ball to the side of the white ball (read the numbers in cm from ABOVE the measuring tape to get correct reading). The measurements will be recorded. Easy, right? :)

2) ALSO, there will be an official training session/course by an international bocce referee on the 28th and 29th September. Refer to previous post please :) An international certificate will be given if you attend this course. This course is not compulsory, HOWEVER it would be very good if you could attend during those 2 days.

There will be Bocce Officiating Course held in conjunction with Special Olympics Asia pacific Bocce Competition. Reminder: SOBD Health Screening event, 30th September 2010

This is a reminder for all the volunteers of the SOBD Asia Pacific Bocce Competition under the HEALTH SCREENING event. MORE volunteers are WELCOMED!

1) The SOBD Health Screening event will take place on Thursday, 30th September 2010 at the RIPAS Sports Complex. The itinerary is as followed:

7.30 am: Registration of volunteers
8.00 am: Screening begins
9.00 am: Opening ceremony
12.00 pm: Morning session ends
1.30 pm: Afternoon session starts
4.30 pm: Ends

2) As a confirmation that you will be coming on the 30th, all volunteers would need to take part in the Training Session, with details as followed:
