Enjoying music for a cause.

Every year, NBT organises an Ochestra concert, where all proceeds goes to Pusat Ehsan. This year, the concert was liven up by Prague Chamber Ochestra led by a very enthusiastic conductor Charles-olivieri munroe and was Graced by Her Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah. Her Royal highness also presented $80,000 total to Learning ladders society and Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al-Hajjah Maryam. Both charitable organisation works closely with autistic individual or individuals with neurological disorder and learning disablities.

"He told The Brunei Times that Pusat Ehsan (PE) currently has about 130 students and 44 teachers. As the classes are provided free of charge, PE has to source for support from public and private organisations. He said that the monthly expenses for PE reached about $30,000, thus there is an urgent need for them to source for support. - Brunei times." Be sure to join next year.

Seeing is believing. Help them believe.

Everyday, when you wake up, you see it is beautifully dark with sparkles outside the window. While having your breakfast you see the beautiful sun slowly rising, shining brightly over your beautiful garden, where flowers are blooming. Red roses. Purple morning glory. pink hibiscus. They say seeing is believing. I believe the sky is blue, the clouds are white. I believe because i saw.

Imagine, the feeling, if you lose the ability to see all the beautiful wonders of the earth.

So often we were given the statistics for world poverty, hunger but how many of you know that every five seconds, one more person somewhere in the world is going blind? There are 45 million blind people in the world. Yes.. 45 people who can't see how you smile, who can't go to places without being helped. Visual impairment does not mean total blindness. Understand this: there are different degrees of blindness. Anyone who can't live without their visual aids, falls in the category too. That includes you if you wear any form of visual aid. And so are 314 million people in the world having serious visual impairment. 90% of blindness are from developing countries, which means poverty has prevented them from getting proper treatment.

Futhermore, 80% of these blindness are curable.

Seeing is believing is a global initiative to reach 32 million blind people, a collaboration with Standard Chartered worldwide. Last Friday, some of the UVC committees had the privilage to join the fundraising event, graced by His royal Highness Prince Azim and Her Royal highness Princess Fadzillah. The event was filled with tips on how to helped the blind and a twist to our afternoon tea- a taste of how a 'dine in the dark' would be. Each pair of attendees were given a mask, where one would wear it, and the other would guide the "blinded" person to have their food. The event was also hyped by auction of top three winning photos of the seeing is believing photography competition and air tickets. All proceeds from the event tickets and the auction goes to the seeing is believing fund for blindness.

Special thanks to RBA frequent flyer section for sponsoring our tickets to the event.

Be a friend to the visually impaired

Saturday, November 7, 2009

Let me be your eyes: HRH Princess Fadzilah Lubabul Bulqiah observes Minister of Health Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman (left) eat noodles blindfolded at the fundraiser organised by StanChart. The 'Seeing is Believing' event was meant to help people open their eyes to the need to champion the cause of the visually impaired. Picture: BT/Rudolf Portillo

FOR most people, eating is such an easy task that they think it could be done with their eyes closed.

Try it and see whether you could finish a meal.

Many tried it yesterday they ate blindfolded at the Standard Chartered Bank's "Seeing is Believing" fundraiser at Manggis Mall. The common finding was that they needed a companion to help them bring spoon to plate and food to mouth.

Guests at the tea event saw for themselves the real need for the community to be more proactive in helping the visually impaired go about their daily lives and remain productive members of society.

At the fundraiser StanChart chief executive officer Danny Quah welcomed guests of honour His Royal Highness Prince Haji 'Abdul 'Azim and Her Royal Highness Princess Fadzilah Lubabul Bulqiah and thanked them for gracing the occasion.

Quah explained the bank is passionate about its cause for the visually impaired, noting that there are 45 million visually impaired people globally, and the number is forecasted to increase to 76 million by 2020.

Worldwide, one child goes blind every minute, and six in every 10 children who go blind die within a year.

Ironically though, eight in every 10 cases of blindness are avoidable, preventable and curable.

The activity arranged by StanChart for the day was to get some of the guests blindfolded and their friends sit beside them and assist those blindfolded in getting the food.

Guests who were blindfolded obviously struggled to even get any food. Some simply had their friends scoop a helping of food on their plates.

One of the blindfolded guests was Jack Chai, a technical staff at B-Mobile. It felt like looking for something in a totally dark room, the 33-year-old told The Brunei Times.

There was a real need for someone to help him in order to get the food, he said.

He said it is a "really meaningful" event for StanChart to organise, and that he hopes people will now understand how difficult it is for the visually impaired to conduct their daily activities. When asked if he thinks he could handle life as a visually impaired for a month, he said it would be really difficult and he would need a lot of help.

It would be impossible to live without any external help, he added.

Some Bruneians have been more than willing to give a helping hand.

Soffiezah Pengiran Hj Abu Bakar is a visually impaired 23-year-old. She attended the fundraiser accompanied by Ruhanna Hj Hassan, her classmate from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).

The third-year student in Brunei Studies said Ruhanna is the one who always helps her around in school, driving her from her hostel to classes and to other activities. She said she can manage alone in her hostel as she knows the place better.

Ruhanna said she usually pages Soffiezah when she reaches the campus and they go to classes together.

Fifty-seven-year-old Francy Matthews was blinded six years ago by her brain tumour, and her husband Russ Matthews has been caring for her ever since.

Russ Matthews spoke of the need for people to pay more attention to their family or friends who are handicapped, especially those newly handicapped, as they can easily fall into a depression.

"Which is why newly blind people eat more chocolate," said Francy. It's not a joke, Russ said, explaining that when people laugh or do something they like, their brain creates serotonin that makes them happy, and chocolate does the same thing to people, which is how it helps with combating depression.

While the visually impaired do need help from friends and family, Francy said that handicapped people should try to get out more, and also do house chores on their own.

There are things like cooking that may not be suitable, but she said she does her laundry and dishwashing on her own.

Russ said the problems faced by handicapped in Brunei include the lack of handicapped-friendly parking lots.

"Even if there is a parking lot, it will be taken up by someone who is not handicapped."

He added that there probably should be an education campaign to let people understand the difficulties faced by the handicapped, and mentioned that the tea-event organised by StanChart is a good example for the rest to follow.

Ticket sales for the event reached $11,400, and a charity auction held at the venue raised $2,510.

Protect environment for better future: Friday sermon

Saturday, November 7, 2009
BRUNEI should play its part to preserve and maintain a cleaner environment to ensure the country continues to live in peace and prosperity, said the Friday sermon.

"In conjunction with the World Maritime Day to be held in November 9, let us play our part to carry out our responsibility as Earth's caliphs by preserving the environment from any destruction and pollution for us to continue breathing fresh air as well as living in prosperity and peaceful in the country," Muslims were told nationwide yesterday.

The sermon further said that to overcome the issue of climate change, the Marine Department has been organising the International Maritime Organisation convention which explores the rules and regulations on the disposal of rubbish from ships and oil containers.

The sermon also highlighted concerns on the destruction of the environment due to irresponsible actions by individuals, such as illegal logging, pollution caused by industries, rampant use of fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions.

"As human beings blessed with the ability to think, we must preserve this Earth that has been bestowed to us by Allah (SWT) not by destroying or polluting it, as God does not take lightly the destruction caused on Earth," said the sermon.

The drastic increase of the sea pollution contributed by the amount of plastic dumped into the sea was another pressing issue in which tens of thousands of marine life has either perished or handicapped by the activity each year.

The sermon went on say that the sea is facing destruction in terms of encroaching activities on beach zones by boats, bombing the sea to acquire shellfish, wastage from oil, mud and grease, as well as industrial waste carried out at sea discreetly or openly.

"Moreover, research found that at least 30,000 life forms had perished because they were trapped," said the sermon.

The sermon said this was due to the massive net, fishing lines and hooks which was set up and deliberately left behind by fishing enthusiasts, thereby killing marine life.

Meanwhile, at least 77 tonne metrics of rubbish have been disposed each year by the shipping industry, while the commercial fisheries industry contributed 135 million kilogrammes of fishing equipment and 24 million kilogrammes of rubbish, mostly plastic-based, which were dumped into the sea.

"This means that the sea has become a dumping ground for rubbish," the sermon observed.

The sea, said the sermon, has a role in balancing the world's climate, while protecting humans from climate change at the same time.

The world is expected to see a shift in temperatures in the next 100 years if environmental destruction and pollution continues. Earth's temperature is expected to increase from 1.1 degree celsius to 6.4 degrees celsius between 1990 to 2100, said the sermon.

"If these predictions are correct, the world will continue to heat up in a century's time and will no longer be safe to live in, this is following the global warming which is closely related to several natural disasters that have occurred," said the sermon.

The increase in temperatures could melt down the polar ice cap, thus increasing water levels, which in turn increases the risk of flash floods, said the sermon.

"Some of the smaller islands have submerged due to the increasing water levels, while other areas with hot weather climate are suddenly facing heavy rain which has made the land much more drier due to the fast absorption rate of water," said the sermon.

The temperature change also contributes to the dampening of the land, which could affect people, including the eco-system of nature, agriculture, supplies, food forests and water source, energy use and transportation.

"For all the things that have been happening, it is only because of our own doing and attitudes," the sermon added.

Picture: BT/Saifulizam
A TOTAL of 140 graduates and undergraduates of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) who have excelled in their studies were rewarded yesterday evening at the Universiti Medals and Book Prizes presentation ceremony at Jerudong Park Polo and Country Club.

The ceremony is held in conjunction with UBD 21st Convocation, and 14 students will receive the Universiti Silver Award this year. The award is given to the best student in his or her respective study programme.

Guest of honour for the ceremony was Minister of Health Yang Berhomat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman.

Her Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah was also among the recipients, being awarded a Book Prize for outstanding performance in her third year of studies in the Bachelor of Arts (Public Policy and Administration) programme.

In his address, Vice Chancellor Dr Hj Zulkarnain told the audience that the medals and book prizes is an appreciation by UBD to its students who achieved outstanding results.

"With this success, I hope it will be an incentive to you, and motivate you to continuously strive to achieve success and excellence in the future. The award tonight should make you (the recipients) the role models to other students," said Dr Hj Zulkarnain.

"You are seen as high achievers and carry huge responsibilities to expand your excellence outside the lecture rooms," added the Vice-Chancellor.

He also reminded the recipients that they are the future leaders of Brunei, and will be responsible to spearhead the growth and development of the country.

The ceremony will see 14 students receiving the Silver Award, 123 students receiving the Universiti book prize, 3 will receive the Award of Achievement and 10 will be recipients of the BLNG award sponsored by BLNG Sdn Bhd.

Among the recipients of the Silver Award is Chong Youn Bao, a graduate in Bachelor of Science, majoring in Computer Science. When asked on what project he contributed to during his time in UBD, he said that there is a Student Management System written by a group of them. The students from the faculty were able to upload their assignments into the system, and lecturers can use the programme to review assignments of students.

Tang Yuan Pin was one amongst the Book prize recipients. She topped the semester for her Bachelor of Science programme in Chemistry. The 23-year-old told The Brunei Times that her love for chemistry started during her time in Sekolah Tinggi Perempuan Raja Isteri. She was deeply influenced by her chemistry teacher Ciku Hasima at that time and decided to pursue the major in UBD.

Another recipient for the Book Prize was Foo Gwen Heong, the top student of the semester for Computer Science. He spoke of his interest in programming among the different technical skills being taught to them in their course. The 23-year-old is currently doing his project on a Distributors Advertising System, and declines to reveal extra information about his project.

There is again no recipient for the Gold Award this year. It is said that a recipient will only receive a Gold Award if they are outstanding on all aspects of their universiti life, from academic, extra-curricular activities, social life to contributions to the community.

As one professor humourously put it, "You know Clark Kent (Superman)? If our students perform just slightly better than him, they should be able to get the Gold Award."

Prior to the cleaning activity, the volunteers were divided into two teams where one team was in-charge of any recyclable rubbish while the other was the non-recyclables. The campaign was organised by UVC as a concluding activity of the semester before the busy exam week.

The activity also saw several new faces and the club's Chairperson, Adibah Hamdani who said that she was overwhelmed with the support given and their presence was greatly appreciated. Meanwhile the Vice Chairperson, Atiqah Raduan added that there are still interested students who would like to join UVC and the club is still welcoming more volunteers to join in as members.

"Plant Your Own Tree"

By: Billah H.

28 October 2009 (Wednesday) - Another busy day for the members of UBD Volunteering and Charity Club (UVC) when the "Plant Your Own Tree" event was officially launched last Wednesday. More than 60 students turned up for the workshop and tree planting activity which was held at the Biology Department, Faculty of Science and behind the UBD main entrance security post building.

(Picture: Lia Hmb)

"Plant Your Own Tree" is a result of a joint collaboration between the Department of Forestry, UBD Estate, MPP (student council) through Health, Security and Environment Exco (HSE) and UVC. It is similar to the "adopt-a-tree" programme where tree adopters are encouraged to take care of their own trees despite the cost of maintenence was inclusive in the $40 paid upon adopting. At the same time, this long term green project is aimed to raise the awareness of UBD undergraduates to the current global environmental issues, besides helping UBD towards a "greener university".
