UBD Volunteering and Charity Club

"We serve to assist. Volunteering for a better future."

Something to ponder...

Every one of us can make a contribution. And quite often we are looking for the big things and forget that, wherever we are, we can make a contribution... just imagine what's happening if there are billions of people out there doing something. Just imagine the power of what we can do."

STUDENTS of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) are keen to become role models and set an example for the next generation by taking the initiative to create a "greener Brunei".

Putting words into action, more than 60 students at the university yesterday planted trees around the campus as part of UBD's "green project workshop".

Faculty of Science student Linji Liaw, 21, was one of the volunteers. "There aren't many heath (kerangas) forests in our country anymore, so I want to contribute by rehabilitating the area by planting trees."

Liaw added that students such as herself understand and recognise that the Sultanate is currently putting emphasis on the "green factor".

"We want to set an example for our peers and locals to start planting trees in order to create a greener Brunei," she said.

Fellow student volunteer, 21-year-old Li Pei Fen from the Faculty of Science said she was very keen on rehabilitating the forests around the campus. "This is a good cause and I want to be a role model for our youths," she said.

A student from the Academy of Brunei Studies, Nursyazwani Roslan, who "adopted" a tree for $40, said she was very excited to plant it as the students were the first from UBD to undertake such an initiative.

"Nowadays, it is so important to plant trees because of global warming. We need to create a greener atmosphere so people can breathe fresh air," she said.

Adding that she was passionate about the environment, she said that it was important for others to realise and "wake up".

"By doing this today, I hope to be a role model for the next generation of students at UBD and at other schools because we have to start young if we want to save our environment," Nursyazwani said.

Pg Mohd Ali Pg Anak Rosledzana, 20, a student at the Institute of Medicine, said he took part in the initiative because he wanted to help restore the forests around UBD that were recently razed by wildfires.

"It just feels like the right thing to do because these forests surround us and now there are hardly any kerangas left," he said.

He hoped the initiative would become an annual event as it is for a good cause. "I also hope I can be a role model for our juniors and that they will follow our steps in the near future," he added.

FAQs

Q. Is the club still open for new members to register?
A. We are actually welcoming more people to register to our club as members (volunteers) and thus, registration is still open.

Q. May I know the number of attendances that are required to obtain the certificate?
A. Despite the registration is still open, there is actually a required three times attendance for members to obtain a certificate. Nonetheless since the club is all about volunteering and charity, we encourage members who doesn't fulfill this three times attendance to join our activities nevertheless (especially during the December semester break). So start counting your attendances by next semester to receive a certificate of appreciation from us!

*In addition, there is supposedly a club registration fee of $4, however we will not collect any for this semester (semester one, 09/10). Payments will only start by next semester (semester two, 09/10) and compulsory to all members.

Q. Are there any activities during the semester break?
A. InsyaAllah, there are actually some planned activities for members to participate. If everything goes smooth, then we will further notify all members through e-mail and our blog.

Q. UVC and PMUBD volunteers are different right?
A. True enough, UVC and PMUBD volunteers are different but our aims and objectives are parallel to each other. On a lighter note, UVC acts as a platform for all UBDian volunteers to gather, share and exchange information. The establishment of the club is also aimed to "register" volunteers in UBD for easy contact in any event where their commitments are needed. Likewise, our club supports every event organised by PMUBD (the student's council) and if they are in need of volunteers, UVC is responsible to help in anyway we can.

We hope that we have answered your questions accordingly. For further inquiries and information, please do not hesitate to contact us via blog and e-mail (uvcvolunteers.blogspot.com & uvcvolunteers@gmail.com)
