Socks for Japan

This is a project started by Jason Kelly, an author residing in Japan, through his blog. Inspired by a news footage where a victim was requesting socks, he started this and many from around the world has responded. And now, it's our turn to take part!

One simple way to help Japan - SOCKS SOCKS SOCKS!
Brand new ones of any sizes, preferably thick socks.

Bring those brand new socks that you want to donate to CLT G.6 on Wednesday, 23rd March 2011. We'll be receiving from 2.00 p.m. onwards.

Why socks?
"Several reasons. Many of the victims ended up barefoot after fleeing in a hurry. In the disaster zone, feet get wet and then extra cold at night, especially in currently freezing weather. People often forget about socks in favor of more obvious items like blankets and jackets. Receiving a new, fresh pair of socks provides a moment of comfort. If those socks arrive with a caring note as well, it’s very heartening for victims. If you’ve ever been stuck in a pair of wet, cold socks or no socks at all, perhaps you remember how soothing it felt to pull on a warm, dry pair. Victims have already requested socks on TV news." -Jason Kelly.

Special Olympic Asia Pacific Bocce Competition- volunteers!

UVC volunteers,

Remember this fun? or did you miss it?

Special Olympics Brunei Darussalam has once again invited UVC to volunteer in Special Olympics Asia Pacific Bocce competition and we would be helping out in the health screening of these special athletes. The date of the screening was decided to be on Thursday, 30th September 2010 (and hopefully they would not change it again)

Since its on a Thursday, we do not encourage you to skip your class just to attend this. There would be a morning or afternoon shift. First come first serve and remember- please be committed as we would pass your names to the Special Olympics committee and certificates would be printed by them =)

Click on the poster for more details and how to register.

And here let me share an article wrote by a man with down syndrome (who is also Global Messenger for Special Olympics) - John Franklin Stephens with the title "Why the word retard hurts people like me" (click on the title to read) its a good read. Salam.

UVC starts!

UVC volunteers,

Happy Ramadhan all. First of all, we have set the first meeting date where those who are interested can register with UBD volunteering and charity club. It would also be the day where the old committee will be dissolved and new committee will be elected. and it would be the day when we would be recruiting juniors or others to be a committee member. We are now in the third year- and we want the foundation that we have built, stays long after we graduate from UBD. Do attend on that day to register with UVC.

And those who wants to get their last SOBD certs can do so on that day too. =) I am busy from morning till afternoon on monday and tuesday so sorry for the inconvenience.

Click on the poster for venue/details. Credit to Billah for the poster.

Secondly, Alhamdullilah, my article about my experience recent community work trip to South Thailand was published in Borneo Bulletin last monday. And i know that its not a UVC project, but as a uvc volunteer- you can say that a UVC volunteer has been there and atleast experience community work at that place even for a short while. The main point that i want to share in this article was that, its not wrong to fear but don't let that fear stop you from contributing. We are the Brunei future anyway. Lets be the "giving-future" I'd like to share it with you about what it was like.

Thirdly, SPECIAL OLYMPICS is BACK and it would on 30th September 2010. On a Thursday unfortunately. So we would not encourage you to skip class. Details will be in another blogpost =)

Sunset at Pantai Jerudong

By: Billah H.

02 November 2009 (Monday) - Some 40 volunteers from the UBD Volunteering and Charity Club (UVC) gathered at Pantai Jerudong yesterday for a beach cleaning campaign. The activity was lead by UVC's Project Planner (Environment) cum Environmental Advisor, Liaw Lin Ji.

Hard at work: UVC members piling up all the plastic bags before throwing them at the prepared bins

Prior to the cleaning activity, the volunteers were divided into two teams where one team was in-charge of any recyclable rubbish while the other was the non-recyclables. The campaign was organised by UVC as a concluding activity of the semester before the busy exam week.

The activity also saw several new faces and the club's Chairperson, Adibah Hamdani who said that she was overwhelmed with the support given and their presence was greatly appreciated. Meanwhile the Vice Chairperson, Atiqah Raduan added that there are still interested students who would like to join UVC and the club is still welcoming more volunteers to join in as members.

Members of the public who happened to be there to enjoy the sunset also joined UVC for the good cause and show their care towards the cleanliness of our beach. Refreshment packs were later distributed to all volunteers. The event ended at a high note with a "Go UVC!" group cheer.

Team work: alone we do so little, but together we can achieve more!
