Picture: BT/Saifulizam
A TOTAL of 140 graduates and undergraduates of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) who have excelled in their studies were rewarded yesterday evening at the Universiti Medals and Book Prizes presentation ceremony at Jerudong Park Polo and Country Club.

The ceremony is held in conjunction with UBD 21st Convocation, and 14 students will receive the Universiti Silver Award this year. The award is given to the best student in his or her respective study programme.

Guest of honour for the ceremony was Minister of Health Yang Berhomat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman.

Her Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah was also among the recipients, being awarded a Book Prize for outstanding performance in her third year of studies in the Bachelor of Arts (Public Policy and Administration) programme.

In his address, Vice Chancellor Dr Hj Zulkarnain told the audience that the medals and book prizes is an appreciation by UBD to its students who achieved outstanding results.

"With this success, I hope it will be an incentive to you, and motivate you to continuously strive to achieve success and excellence in the future. The award tonight should make you (the recipients) the role models to other students," said Dr Hj Zulkarnain.

"You are seen as high achievers and carry huge responsibilities to expand your excellence outside the lecture rooms," added the Vice-Chancellor.

He also reminded the recipients that they are the future leaders of Brunei, and will be responsible to spearhead the growth and development of the country.

The ceremony will see 14 students receiving the Silver Award, 123 students receiving the Universiti book prize, 3 will receive the Award of Achievement and 10 will be recipients of the BLNG award sponsored by BLNG Sdn Bhd.

Among the recipients of the Silver Award is Chong Youn Bao, a graduate in Bachelor of Science, majoring in Computer Science. When asked on what project he contributed to during his time in UBD, he said that there is a Student Management System written by a group of them. The students from the faculty were able to upload their assignments into the system, and lecturers can use the programme to review assignments of students.

Tang Yuan Pin was one amongst the Book prize recipients. She topped the semester for her Bachelor of Science programme in Chemistry. The 23-year-old told The Brunei Times that her love for chemistry started during her time in Sekolah Tinggi Perempuan Raja Isteri. She was deeply influenced by her chemistry teacher Ciku Hasima at that time and decided to pursue the major in UBD.

Another recipient for the Book Prize was Foo Gwen Heong, the top student of the semester for Computer Science. He spoke of his interest in programming among the different technical skills being taught to them in their course. The 23-year-old is currently doing his project on a Distributors Advertising System, and declines to reveal extra information about his project.

There is again no recipient for the Gold Award this year. It is said that a recipient will only receive a Gold Award if they are outstanding on all aspects of their universiti life, from academic, extra-curricular activities, social life to contributions to the community.

As one professor humourously put it, "You know Clark Kent (Superman)? If our students perform just slightly better than him, they should be able to get the Gold Award."

"Plant Your Own Tree"

By: Billah H.

28 October 2009 (Wednesday) - Another busy day for the members of UBD Volunteering and Charity Club (UVC) when the "Plant Your Own Tree" event was officially launched last Wednesday. More than 60 students turned up for the workshop and tree planting activity which was held at the Biology Department, Faculty of Science and behind the UBD main entrance security post building.

"Plant Your Own Tree" is a result of a joint collaboration between the Department of Forestry, UBD Estate, MPP (student council) through Health, Security and Environment Exco (HSE) and UVC. It is similar to the "adopt-a-tree" programme where tree adopters are encouraged to take care of their own trees despite the cost of maintenence was inclusive in the $40 paid upon adopting. At the same time, this long term green project is aimed to raise the awareness of UBD undergraduates to the current global environmental issues, besides helping UBD towards a "greener university".

UBD steps up to preserve the local 'kerangas' tree

RACHEL THIEN
BRUNEI-MUARA

Thursday, October 29, 2009

IN A major step to save a local tree from being endangered in Brunei, Universiti of Brunei Darussalam (UBD) pounced on the opportunity to rehabilitate forests around its campus by encouraging students to plant the native kerangas tree around the area yesterday.

Caring hands: Two UBD students soil their hands in the burnt kerangas forest near their campus' entrance as part of a rehabilitation effort under the university's Green Project in Tungku. The university pounced on the opportunity to rehabilitate forests around its campus by encouraging 60 students to plant the native kerangas tree yesterday. Not many people in the Sultanate give value to local species of trees as they are more interested in exotic species. Picture: BT/Saifulizam

UBD's Department of Biological Science Senior Lecturer Dr Kushan Tennakoon, also facilitator of UBD's Green Project workshop, told The Brunei Times that not many people in the Sultanate had given value to local species of trees as they were more interested in exotic species.

The senior lecturer explained that if students and staff did not support the rehabilitation of the kerangas, then the exotic Acacia shrub in the forests would invade its lands and alter the landscape.

"In collaboration with UBD's estate office, the forestry department, UBD's volunteer club and its student council, we decided to educate students on methods in planting the trees because we want to avoid the alteration process from happening, which could occur within the next few years," he said.

Considering students' critical role in the future of the country, UBD intended to inculcate as much knowledge as they could to students about preserving and rehabilitating forests.

UBD's Assistant Registrar of the Estate Office Hjh Maudena Hj Abd Hamid said this was the first time UBD had conducted a workshop specifically to educate students on planting trees and its purpose.

"We want students to develop the sense of being green, and we also hope that students will be able to pass on the message to others," she said.

However, she added it did not stop there. "We want follow-up actions, such as planting the trees after the workshop and maintaining the trees," she said, adding the reason for holding the workshop was to impart knowledge on skills in handling the trees.

Hjh Maudena also said the workshop and tree-planting activities were "hands-on training" that would ensure students would like taking part in conserving forests. "This initiative could even lead to students participating in projects of a broader scale, such as the Heart of Borneo project," she said.

Meanwhile, she added UBD's green initiative would also contribute indirectly to Heart of Borneo.

"Heart of Borneo concentrates on conserving Brunei's forests, but what we are doing is contributing to it by rehabilitating this special species of tree that lives all around us," she said.

Before students planted the 60 trees donated by the Forestry Department, they went into the forests surrounding the campus to gather saplings for the next cycle of tree planting.

"We want to continuously have a bank of saplings to rehabilitate this area, and that is why we are sending the students to gather them before actually planting this round of trees," Hjh Maudena said.

Senior Forestry Officer Noralinda Ibrahim said, "We are working with UBD because we want to re-green the area back to what it was before. This is also part of the climate change initiative," she said.

She was also pleased that UBD stepped forward to aid the department "green" Brunei.

However, she said that the forestry department was not only looking for students or the public to plant the trees, but to maintain them.

A total of 60 trees were planted during the event, involving more than 60 students and staff of the university.

Also present were 13 officials from the Forestry Department.

We want to be role models: Students

Thursday, October 29, 2009
STUDENTS of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) are keen to become role models and set an example for the next generation by taking the initiative to create a "greener Brunei".

Putting words into action, more than 60 students at the university yesterday planted trees around the campus as part of UBD's "green project workshop".

Faculty of Science student Linji Liaw, 21, was one of the volunteers. "There aren't many heath (kerangas) forests in our country anymore, so I want to contribute by rehabilitating the area by planting trees."

Liaw added that students such as herself understand and recognise that the Sultanate is currently putting emphasis on the "green factor".

"We want to set an example for our peers and locals to start planting trees in order to create a greener Brunei," she said.

Fellow student volunteer, 21-year-old Li Pei Fen from the Faculty of Science said she was very keen on rehabilitating the forests around the campus. "This is a good cause and I want to be a role model for our youths," she said.

A student from the Academy of Brunei Studies, Nursyazwani Roslan, who "adopted" a tree for $40, said she was very excited to plant it as the students were the first from UBD to undertake such an initiative.

"Nowadays, it is so important to plant trees because of global warming. We need to create a greener atmosphere so people can breathe fresh air," she said.

Adding that she was passionate about the environment, she said that it was important for others to realise and "wake up".

"By doing this today, I hope to be a role model for the next generation of students at UBD and at other schools because we have to start young if we want to save our environment," Nursyazwani said.

Pg Mohd Ali Pg Anak Rosledzana, 20, a student at the Institute of Medicine, said he took part in the initiative because he wanted to help restore the forests around UBD that were recently razed by wildfires.

"It just feels like the right thing to do because these forests surround us and now there are hardly any kerangas left," he said.

He hoped the initiative would become an annual event as it is for a good cause. "I also hope I can be a role model for our juniors and that they will follow our steps in the near future," he added.

Tree Planting & Soil Digging Activity

By: Billah H.

A job well done to the members of UBD Volunteering and Charity Club (UVC) for their involvement in the recent tree planting and soil digging activity organised jointly by UBD Estate and Health, Security and Environment Exco (MPP). It was held to prepare for the "Plant Your Own Tree" event, a part of the ongoing Green Project in conjunction with Pesta Convo 2009, which will commence officially on Wednesday, October 28th.

Some personnels from the Department of Forestry also came to assist with the soil digging, along with the facilitators of the Green Project, Dr Kushan Tenakoon from Faculty of Science and Dr Kamariah Abu Salim, the Head of Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre (KBFSC).

Miss Maudena, the assistant registrar of the UBD Estate, said that about 60 trees are going to be planted during the "Plant Your Own Tree" event this Wednesday while 60 or more tree saplings will be further collected for the second cycle of workshop. The event is more or less similar to that of the "adopt a tree" programme whereby the tree adopters are welcome to take care of the trees that they bought.

Besides soil digging, UVC members were also asked to pull out the seedlings of Acacia trees which have grown numerously after the forest fire. According to Dr Kamariah, the Acacia trees are from Australia and they are invasive species to the local trees. The Acacias were originally brought to Brunei in the early 50s and 60s in order to combat the soil erosion which was problematic at that time. Especially in Kerangas forest, they out compete the local species in terms of nutrients and water supply hence diminishing the number of local Kerangas species.

The activity ended with a small refreshments prepared by the UBD Estate.

Ms. Maudena also said that she hoped that the UVC will continuously be involved in this long-term green project since the volunteers involved are UBD undergraduates. In other words, the students themselves will be more aware of the current environmental issues and to involve them with green activities. The activity ends at the UBD plant nursery near to the sports complex whereby the volunteers helped the gardeners to arrange and bag the saplings with some topsoils and fertilizers.

UVC Ice-breaking and Recycling Activity
By: Billah H.

14 October 2009 (Wednesday) - UBD Volunteering and Charity Club (UVC) recently held its first activity this semester which was the ice-breaking session, held at the HEP Meeting Room and the recycling activity at the ATM area. The activity went well despite the PMUBD having a Hari Raya Celebration at the HEP open area opposite to the PMUBD Shoppe and the Cultural Exco organising "UBD Got Talent" audition at the Multi-Purpose Hall.

Group photo - UVC committee and representatives from Daikyo Recycling Company Sdn Bhd

Adibah Hamdani, the club's Chairperson when interviewed said that the ice-breaking session was aimed as a "public reach out" where students can ask questions and know the upcoming activities that are going to be organised by UVC. Among the questions raised is the number of attendances required in order to obtain a certificate from the club and activities during the one-month semester break in December.

A snapshot taken during the ice-breaking session

Meanwhile at the ATM area, UVC has set up a booth as a drop-off point for the recycling activity. According to the club's Environmental Project Planner cum Environmental Advisor, Liaw Lin Ji, the recycling activity wouldn't happen without the support and cooperation from the PMUBD, UBD.fm and Daikyo Recycling Company Sdn Bhd. She also informed that the majority of the recycled materials that day were old newspapers and magazines compared to plastic bottles and tinned cans. Being in the "middle" of the celebrations also gave UVC a plus point where the public can easily drop their recyclable materials.

The activity was also held to support this year's Pesta Convo theme which is "UBD Can! Reduce, Reuse & Recycle".
