THE Special Olympics Brunei Darussalam (SOBD) rolled out a the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes Programme yesterday at the Multipurpose Hall of the Berakas Secondary School.
One hundred volunteers from Ministry of Health, Sports Medicine and Research Centre, Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al-Hajjah Maryam, Performance Optimisation Centre - Penanjong Camp and undergraduates from Universiti Brunei Darussalam's UVC (University Volunteer and Charity Club) - were on hand to conduct free health checks of 150 athletes competing in the 5th SOBD National Games.
The checks were run to strengthen awareness among health professionals on the importance of providing appropriate health-related services to people with intellectual disabilities and also to improve access and health care for SO athletes and young athletes alike.
The SOBD ran four medical initiatives yesterday: SO Fit Feet (Podiatry), SO FUNfitness (Physiotherapy), SO Opening Eyes (Eye) and SO Special Smiles (Dental). In SO Fit Feet, athletes received foot, ankle and lower extremity mechanics screening for deformities.
Vision screening, including vision and eye health tests were those done for SO Opening Eyes and SO Special Smiles offers dental screening, health education and preventive services including referrals for follow-up care from dentists.
Hj Mahmud Hj Maidin, who brought his son for screening, praised the efforts by the volunteers in making the programme a success.
"The screening is really good for the kids as it ensures good health," said Hj Mahmud, who first brought his son to join SOBD in 2007.
The event was officiated by Hjh Norsiah Hj Johari, the Acting Director of General Services at the Ministry of Health.
The SOBD 5th National Games kicked off last Thursday at the Balapan Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex with some 200 special athletes competing in track and field, Bocce, football, bowling and Young Athletes (Aged eight and below) over a three-day period.
